Diving for Humanity (DFH) was founded in August 2016 and is the world's first non-profit organization dedicated to teaching scuba diving to children diagnosed with autism. Our mission is to utilize scuba diving as a bridge to build up their personal development and to integrate better into society. In addition, through scuba diving, most autistic children will be able to release their tension and become more emotionally stable. Also, by completing some small tasks in scuba diving lessons, students could appreciate their own and take pride in their ability and accomplishment. This not only could raise their self-esteem, but also help them create a good personal development.
The club is co-founded by scuba diving instructor Winston Shum and his personal instructor L Bo Chan. From Oct 2013 to Jan 2014, Winston was given an opportunity to lead his band, Alien, to visit a group of autistic children at a charity event in Guangzhou. It was his first time meeting anyone with autism and the experience was very inspirational and left him with a lasting impression. He started to believe that people with autism were not entirely shielded off from the outside world, rather, they were trying their best to socialize and to make friends. All they needed was a bridge for communication.
Up until now, DFH has provided services to more than 60 autistic students, and has organized two scuba diving training camps in Palau and Cebu. We also have clubs in Guangzhou, the United States, Hong Kong and Macau. In the future, we will continue to follow our mission, beliefs and values to help more people.
